If a tooth is damaged or decayed to the extent that is cannot be saved or restored through regular procedures like fillings or root canals, your dentist may recommend that the tooth be extracted or removed. There are two types of extractions: simple and surgical. Simple extractions involve straightforward removal of the defected tooth using local anesthesia, without having to cut the surrounding bone. A surgical extraction, however, involves oral sedation and will require the bone around the tooth to be cut in order for it to be extracted successfully.
